When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s probably safe to say it’s my favorite “rom com” of all time. It opened in theatres the year I graduated from high school, but I didn’t appreciate it until much later. Hubbie and I have seen it so many times that we have memorized half the dialogue.  And there is some GREAT dialogue.  And that is thanks to the smart writing of Nora Ephron.

Nora passed away yesterday at the age of 71.  She will always be remembered as the romantic comedy queen.  She wrote Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Bewitched, Julie & Julia, and all these great lines from When Harry Met Sally:

“It’s amazing. You look like a normal person but actually you are the angel of death.”

“All I’m saying is that somewhere out there is the man you are supposed to marry. And if you don’t get him first, somebody else will, and you’ll have to spend the rest of your life knowing that somebody else is married to your husband.”

“Someone is staring at you in ‘personal growth.'”

“But I’d like the pie heated and I don’t want the ice cream on top, I want it on the side, and I’d like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it, if not then no ice cream just whipped cream but only if it’s real; if it’s out of the can then nothing. Not even the pie? No, I want the pie, but then not heated.”

“Draw SOMETHING resembling ANYTHING!”

“The fact that you’re not answering leads me to believe you’re either (a) not at home, (b) home but don’t want to talk to me, or (c) home, desperately want to talk to me, but trapped under something heavy. If it’s either (a) or (c), please call me back.”

..and probably the most famous:

“I’ll have what she’s having.”

And this clip is the best romantic comedy ending ever! Not only because it takes place on New Year’s Eve, but because it’s equally romantic and comedy. RIP, Nora.

“I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Not so “Brave”

We decided not to take Annabel to Brave as her very first movie theatre movie because of some of the reviews.   (Daniel’s first movie theatre movie was Cars 2. It was the perfect choice for my little car lover although the movie was “eh.”  That’s MY official review. )  I knew Brave would be perfect for Annabel because it’s about Disney/Pixar’s new princess, Merida.  And Princess Merida has curly hair (like Annabel!) and Merida is tough and can hang with the boys.  She’s a different kid of Disney Princess and she just seems SO COOL.

But some of the reviews I read on CommonSenseMedia.org said things like:

“Too scary for young children!!!” (Yes, with THREE exclamation points.)

“Brave requires bravery to watch with younger children…”

“Too scary.”

“Great message – but scary for little ones.”

“Why would you take your sweet, innocent 4 year old daughter to this SUPER SCARY movie?”

That last one was me.  Sorry.

Now, I’m all about Annabel seeing a strong-willed princess on the big screen. But I just couldn’t chance her crying and wanting to leave.  This would be her first experience at the fancy movie theatre.  I imagined her in the sweet little Brave T-shirt I bought her from the Disney store.  She would be munching on popcorn and then, all of a sudden, the big scary bears would jump on screen and she would run for the exit. And she might not want to go back to that scary movie theatre place ever, ever again.

So, we decided to wait and take her to see Ice Age 4 when it opens next month.  She’s seen 1, 2, and 3 at home and she loves all the characters.  I’m not worried about that one.  And to cushion the blow after telling Annabel on Sunday afternoon that we had to change plans because Brave was only for “older kids,”  I bought her the book and the Merida baby doll.  (I’m a sucker. Yes. I know.)

Speaking of new Disney princesses, here’s a just released sneak peek of Disney Junior’s new princes series called Sofia the First.  (And this one does not look scary at all.  Phew!) Sofia the First debuts this fall as a primetime television movie on the Disney Channel, followed by the series premiere on Disney Junior in early 2013.  Modern Family star Ariel Winter voices Sofia.

Summer Camp

I just dropped off both my kiddies at their very first summer day camp.  It’s every day from 9 AM to 3 PM and I don’t know how I’m going to make it.  I keep looking at the clock.  Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.  Daniel was a little nervous.  He takes longer to warm up to new experiences.  Annabel was fine once she found a little friend. They held hands and went off to put together a puzzle.  So I snuck away.  They both have to eat lunch there and today is “sloppy joes.”  They’ve never had a sloppy joe.  There’s also lots of swimming (which Daniel loves) and crafts (which Annabel loves.)  Once I get through this first day, I’ll be FINE.  But this is HARD.  I feel empty.  I miss them so much.  I even miss them running around here and driving me bonkers.  (Come on, 3 PM!)

In the meantime, here are some photos of Daniel from his first Tennis Camp last week.  That was easier for me to handle.  It was every day from Noon to 3 PM and I technically could stay and watch.  I only stayed a few minutes at the beginning and that was because I love to watch him play.  He LOVES tennis. And he’s getting so good!  It rained every day last week but the sun came out just for the three hours he had his lessons.  He was so happy.  Annabel was there in full support and the coach even let her help pick up the balls at the end. She wants to play now too.

*Update:  They both had a blast at summer day camp.  Of course they did.  It’s camp!  I always worry for nothing.

**Update: Part Two:  They also went on their very first camp field trip.  It was also their first time on a SCHOOL BUS.  I didn’t tell them that I drove to Chuck E. Cheese’s to spy on them as they walked off the bus.  I couldn’t help it.  They both had a great time.

Luke Bryan: Drunk on You

Why am I just discovering this hot country boy Luke Bryan?

I like country music, but I’ve been away for a little bit.  I’m not as up-to-date with ALL the newcomers.  But I was watching the 2012 CMT Music Awards last night and Luke Bryan brought down the house (!) with this live performance of his new song, “Drunk on You.”  I love his black and white outfit and matching baseball cap. The girls in the audience went crazy.  I was going a little crazy too on my couch in my PJs.  I found out he’s married with children, which makes him even sexier.  He also won the award for Male Video of the Year.

He’s coming to my town in August (on the Jason Aldean tour), so I might have to wipe this drool from my chin and “pretty please” convince the hubbie to take me.

John Mayer: Shadow Days

John Mayer is BACK, baby.  After all the bad press and hub bub about Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, it was probably for the best that he just left for awhile.  (And now he’s finally addressing that controversial Taylor Swift song, “Dear John.”  He just told Rolling Stone, “It made me feel terrible.” and “..I didn’t deserve it.”  Just be careful, Johnny boy!)

Then he had some serious throat issues which required surgery.  He still can’t sing or go on tour, but you know what?  All of the stress and hardship has created an amazing album, Born and Raised.  I think it’s one of his best.  It’s one of those albums you can put on from start to finish.  Every song is great.  He just makes you feel his pain, his somberness, his loneliness, and even some of his peace.  He truly is an awesome singer/songwriter.  I’m not loving the longer hair, but he can pull it off.

Here’s the first single from the new album, “Shadow Days.”  It’s a beautiful video.  I hope your shadow days are over, JM.  And get well soon.  I need to hear this album LIVE.

The Snack Bag Series: Final Edition

Daniel “graduated” from Pre-K last week so I wanted to feature some of his final snack bags.  His passion for only drawing buildings surprisingly changed and he wanted to draw bridges, ships, and even birds.  (But he still threw in the Eiffel Tower.)

I love this kid.  I told him I’m saving all these photos so he can do an art showing in New York City one day.
