Disney World Trip ’14: Frozen Meet-and-Greet

Hi! We’re back from the “happiest place on earth” and it’s only understandable that we’re all a bit sad. Not only is Disney World so much fun, but it brings my family close together. We are LITERALLY close together in a small hotel room every night, but then we spend the day creating all these special family memories. My daughter woke up for school on Tuesday morning in tears. She missed Disney World so much. It made me sad, but it also warmed my heart to know that she enjoyed her time with her family.

Speaking of tears, I’m sure there were some flowing from the PARENTS’ eyes when they saw the line in Epcot to meet Frozen‘s Elsa and Anna. It was almost four hours long! You can meet them in Epcot’s Norway pavilion. It’s right across from Akershus Royal Banquet Hall. They are set up in the back of the gift shop and you can see a side view from an opening. There was a mini-line for that side view too!  I waited patiently for our turn to sneak a peek of the girls from Arendelle. I think the wait helped me convince Annabel that this was “Soooo coooool! Look! It’s Anna and Elsa!!  I’ll take a picture for you!!”  I was desperately trying to avoid the “But can we meet them?”conversation, because now that  line was “five hours long” according to the lovely Grandpa standing next to us.

(Tip: The Frozen girls are in the meet-and-greet area everyday from 9 AM to 6 PM. I would suggest you head straight there when Epcot opens and hopefully your wait will be under an hour. Another option is to book an early 8 AM breakfast at Norway’s Akershus Royal Banquet Hall so someone from your group can stand in line at 8:45 AM before the gates open.)

Annabel was fine with the side look because I quickly distracted her with the Frozen stuff. “Look! They have Elsa dresses!” Well,  they DID have Elsa dresses, but there were all the same size: Extra Small. Boo. There were no more Elsa T-shirts or barbie dolls either. There were no Olaf plushes. We moved through the rest of the toy section where I saw Moms grabbing some plush Anna and Elsa topsy-turvy dolls. I remember having one of those as a kid!  Mine was Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf when you flipped it upside down. The Anna/Elsa ones were starting to go like hot cakes, so I told Annabel that could be her one Frozen treat. Daniel found a Norwegian viking helmet, so he was all good. We waited in another line to pay for the treats and then off we went. I gave knowing looks to the poor parents still standing in the heat with their little girls. I said a little “thank you” to the Frozen Gods that I avoided that..for today.

(Tip: I also noticed they did not have any Elsa or Anna dresses left in Magic Kingdom’s Bibbidy Bobbidi Boutique. I was told that some days they have them, but they sell out so quickly. If you can find a dress in a store in your hometown, BUY IT. You can always bring it with you to the boutique and your little one can put it on there before the princess hair and makeup session.)

The Norway Pavilion also has a display of Norwegian items and photos that inspired Frozen and you can see them in the Stave Church. It was neat to walk through and see the real-life church and mountainside village that gave the Disney animators the idea to create the Arendelle setting. I think we are all a little more Frozen–obsessed now, if that’s even possible.

Update on 3/21: It’s been announced that Anna and Elsa will soon move from Epcot to Disney’s Magic Kingdom!  Starting Sunday, April 20th, they’ll join some of their fellow Disney Royals at Princess Fairytale Hall, where the Disney FastPass+ service will be available! Yay!

Oscars 2014: My Top 5 Favorite Moments

You gotta love the Oscars! They started at 8:30 PM ET and I knew I’d be up past Midnight. And I hung in until the end! I thought it was a fun show with cool moments, but there were no real surprises. (Well, besides this horrible flub by John Travolta.)

Here are my Top 5 Favorite Moments from Hollywood’s most glamorous night:

1. Pizza!

Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres ordered pizza for the hungry celebs about halfway through the show and it could have been a serious eye roll moment, but it was adorable. That’s how good Ellen is as host. It was especially awesome to see Brad Pitt munching down on a slice of cheese while Kevin Spacey passed out the paper plates. Later, Ellen brought out Pharrell’s hat to collect money for the delivery dude. It was hilarious to see the hundred dollar bills getting passed down the aisles. Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o did not have cash, but she threw in her lip balm. (Clarins HydraQuench, in case you were wondering.)

2. The Ultimate A-List Selfie!

You know it’s the “Year of the Selfie” when celebrities still clamor to get in the shot. Ellen handed Bradley Cooper her phone to snap this epic photo from the audience. Not only is it so awesome (Brangelina! J-Law! Julia!), but it crashed Twitter. This pic currently has over 2 million retweets and is the most retweeted photo on Twitter EVER.

3. Happy!

Pharrell did not wear his signature hat on the red carpet, but he started a brand new social media trend with his tuxedo shorts. My son turned to me and said, “Mama, that is what I would wear to the Oscars!” But that infamous hat did return when Pharrell sang the Oscar nominated song “Happy” from Despicable Me 2. The performance featured colorful dancers bopping around to the catchy beat. But the best part was when Pharrell headed to the front row to boogie down with Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep, and Amy Adams.

4. Alright. Alright. Alright!

He did it! Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for Best Actor for his amazing turn in Dallas Buyers Club. It wasn’t a surprise, but it was still so sweet. And Matthew gives the best acceptance speeches. He said he needs three things in his life to survive: God, family, and someone to look up to as a hero. Love him.

5. White Suits and Princess Dresses!

I love to see what the celebrities are wearing as they walk down the red carpet and this year did not diaappoint. My favorite fashion moments were the men in their white tuxedo suits and those dreamy princess gowns. Here are my favs:

Oscars 2014: My Predictions

Here are my Oscar predictions for Sunday night! But please note: these are based solely on the movies I have actually SEEN. So there’s that.

Best Picture:  GRAVITY

Gravity mesmerized me from start to finish. The advanced film making, the attention to deal, and those heart pounding special effects made this, for me, THE film of the year. It doesn’t hurt that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the gorgeous leads.

gravity

Best Actress: CATE BLANCHETT

Cate OWNS Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine and the emotional roller coaster she goes on makes this film so incredibly entertaining and heart breaking. I can’t imagine anyone else winning.

cate_blanchett_blue_jasmine banner

Best Actor: MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY

Alright. Alright. Alright! One of my favorite actors is going to win an Oscar! His physical transformation alone is amazing. But Matthew has finally proved to everyone that he can do the dramatic, gritty roles he was born to play. He IS Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.  I loved him so much in this movie. I don’t think he can lose.

matthew DBC

Best Supporting Actress: JENNIFER LAWRENCE

I loved American Hustle, but I loved it mostly because of Jennifer Lawrence’s sparkling performance as the flawed wife of a con man. Everytime she is on screen, Jennifer shines. Is there anything she can’t do?

american-hustle-jlaw

Best Supporting Actor: JARED LETO

When I saw Dallas Buyers Club in the movie theatre, a man in front of me leaned over to his wife and asked, “Who’s that actress playing Rayon?” Well, it wasn’t an actress at all, it was Jared Leto in a completely immersed peformance as Matthew McConaughey’s transgender partner-in-crime. Jared is revolutionary. You must see this film.

Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics: My Recap

I wanted to do a quick recap of my favorite moments from this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi. Surprisingly, everything that came to my head had nothing at all to do with one of our awesome athletes winning a medal.

I thought about the perfectly patriotic Team USA sweaters:

team usa sweaters

I thought about the Olympic ring that wouldn’t open.

I thought about Bob Costas’ pink eye. Poor, Bob.

bob-costas-pink-eye1

I thought about figure skater Ashley Wagner’s look of disbelief that became THE meme of the Olympics.

ashley wagner

I thought about that yellow water in Sochi hotel rooms. Yuck.

But then I remembered these three. Yes, one of the coolest moments from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi was the birth of a BROMANCE.

Sochi Olympics Freestyle Skiing Men

How cute are these guys? That’s Joss Christensen, Gus Kenworthy, and Nick Goepper. They are the gold, silver, and bronze medal winners in the first ever men’s slopestyle skiing event. Yep. We SWEPT that category and these three are now a tight trio. Josh (the one wearing that gold medal) lost his dad six months before the Olympics and he dedicated his epic win to him. Josh had to lean on his teammates during this difficult time and they’ve become a close family. They even roomed together in the Sochi dorms (while bonding over the horrible food and living conditions.) And they’ll definitely be bonded for life over this:

cornflakes

From Nick Goepper’s Twitter Page (@NickGoepper)

An Olympian’s dream! Your face on Kellogg’s Corn Flakes! Nick tweeted: “Is this even real? The slopestyle dream team is on the cover of a cereal box!”

The three single (and available!) cuties were even asked about their dream Valentine’s Day dates. Joss wanted to try his magic on Harry Potter actress Emma Watson. Silver medalist Gus and bronze winner Nick are crushing on pop stars Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, respectively.  Miley did respond back on Twitter so Gus’ popularity on social media is super high among the teen girls right now.

Gus also made headlines for being one of the many athletes who are trying to save the stray dogs in Sochi. He hopes to bring a bunch of them back to the states. The dogs are seen as a big problem in Sochi and the City Hall there has ordered them killed. Yikes. So athletes, like Gus, are trying to do what they can to find some of these pups a new home in the US.  Awww.

I love these three and their Olympic bromance. And how cool would it be if they could sing? How about the first ever boy band made up of all Olympic medal winners? YES! It doesn’t get more American than that.

Super Bowl 2014

Saturday was my birthday and my awesome husband sent me this:

1800317_10152202771710970_2133581926_n

That’s Eric Decker from the Denver Broncos and I’m a big fan. Unfortunately, the Broncos lost 43-8 (yikes!) to the Seattle Seahawks. It was a brutal game. By halftime, I was giving up on the Broncos. Then, Bruno Mars jumped out of my TV screen with this high energy performance. It made me feel much, much better.

Check out those dance moves! He was on fire! It was definitely one of my favorite Super Bowl halftime performance to date. (You have competition, Beyonce!) I’m adding you to my must-see-in-concert list, Mr. Mars.

Missing Sesame Street

Huffington Post Parents asked on Twitter last week: What’s one Children’s book/TV show/movie you’ll secretly miss when your kids lose interest in them?

I answered:

Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 3.08.55 PM

I had to “give up” Sesame Street a long time ago. I wrote about it HERE because it was a bit heartbreaking. I was a Sesame Street kid growing up and it was the first show I knew I would share with my kids one day. Daniel and Annabel both loved Sesame Street and the touring version was their first live theater show. They had all the toys and Daniel even had a Cookie Monster cake for his fourth birthday.

Children’s milestones are always tough. I never thought I would get sentimental over the loss of a television show. It’s also hard when I read a press release about a brand new muppet character. Did you see that Dr. Ruster (pronounced “Rooster”) is now on the scene?

dr ruster - ss

That’s Dr. Ruster holding the healthy apple.

Dr. Ruster is modeled after physician Valentin Fuster, who has worked with Sesame Street on a project aimed at promoting smart food choices to improve the health of children and their families. They basically wanted a balance for Cookie Monster. The new message is that certain things like cookies are “something you can eat sometimes, but there are some foods that you can eat all the time,” like fruits and veggies.

I love this! Do you think I can sneak in an episode of Sesame Street tonight after my two are done watching Jessie?

The 2014 Grammys: Tay and Bey

Did you watch the Grammys last night? It was a LONG one. There were a lot of confusing winners. Daft Punk for Album of the Year? “Get Lucky” is a cool jam, but I felt Red should have one!  See, Taylor agrees.

19dsspadncblfgif

I thought you won too, girl! (So did your Mom and Dad!) But instead of saying Red, they said Random Access Memories, Daft Punk’s album. Bummer. Red is Taylor’s best studio album to date and she gave us an amazing piano performance last night of “All Too Well,” a song she wrote about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. She sounded amazing. It was my favorite moment of the night, complete with head banging, angst staring, and one gorgeous dress. See, Girls star Lena Dunham agrees.

And then there was that hot opening number with Beyonce. Blue’s mama was on fire. You can never take your eyes off Queen Bey when she performs. Bow down.

Jay-Z joined his wife on stage for “Drunk in Love” and the Grammys were off to a great start.  Then, they slowed down a little bit. I kept waiting for Beyonce to perform again.

Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 8.21.58 AM

I do realize that Beyonce’s sexy number displeased a bunch of parents who had children up at 8:00 pm. I definitely would not show my kiddos that performance, or Katy Perry’s either. Katy’s was too dark and spooky, just as Beyonce’s was too sexy. But if I’m looking at the entertainment aspect, she knocked it out of the park. It’s a great song and it’s cool to see a married couple with kids get their groove on. I also thought Lorde did a great job for her first Grammy performance. I loved Robin Thicke singing “Blurred Lines” and “Saturday in the Park” with the legendary Chicago men. Carole King with Sara Bareilles was a great moment and I love her “Brave” anthem. Madonna represented with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and 34 couples were married during “Same Love.” And everyone was talking about Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar. Oh, and Pharrell’s hat.

But the night, to me, was all about Tay and Bey. Just check out their red carpet dresses. Winning!

Frozen

I live in Florida. But it sure doesn’t feel like it.

freeze - 1

This is how we’ve all been looking over the past few weeks. It’s fun to have a real winter in the Sunshine State, but, gimme a break Mother Nature. I had to go out to Target and stock up on gloves, warmer coats, and even a face mask for Annabel to wear to her brother’s flag football game.

freeze - 2

She’s worn it for the past three weeks because we are freezing here! I chaperoned her class to an outdoor charity groundbreaking event this week and the poor thing had to wear her little plastic hard hat over her knit hat. I wish I had the picture of all the Moms huddling around the one space heater in the back.

freeze - 3

We have turned into true Floridians who complain when the temperature drops below 50 degrees. I grew up in Maryland, so I know what it’s like to stand at the bus stop until I couldn’t feel my toes. We would smile at the nice lady in the house at the end of the street so she would let us wait in her living room until the school bus was in sight. I put Wonder Bread bags over my socks when it was time to go sledding. I missed school when it snowed and I would spend the entire day outside playing in the wet cold stuff. But now, I’m a glorified cold weather WIMP. I keep watching the news to see when our warmer days are coming.

Speaking of frozen, are your kids obsessed with this song too?

“Let it Go” is THE break out song from Disney’s FROZEN movie . Idina Menzel rocks it. (And “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” gets me chocked up EVERY TIME. “We used to be best buddies.” Sniff.)

frozen - 5

My whole family loved FROZEN. It has a great message of sisterhood and the music was so awesome. Annabel loved when Elsa made her ice castle and Daniel thought Olaf was hilarious. Santa gave Annabel the FROZEN soundtrack in her Christmas stocking and it’s been playing in our house ever since. She came home from school the other day and requested a FROZEN party. That meant throwing on her FROZEN T-shirt from The Children’s Place and listening to all the FROZEN songs for the five hundredth time on our CD player. I made the kids some FROZEN drinks with what I already had in the fridge: skim organic milk over ice cubes topped with non-fat whipped cream and snowflake sprinkles. I added a “frozen” blue straw and the party began!

FROZEN will be released on Blu-ray/DVD on Tuesday, March 18th and don’t be thinking we haven’t already added that sucker to our Amazon Prime shopping cart. Along with a new pair of cozy UGG boots for Mama. Brrr.

Go Broncos!

I really, really, REALLY want the Denver Broncos to make it to the Super Bowl on February 2nd. I’m a huge Broncos fan. (NOT.) I’m a huge football fan. (NOPE.) I’m a shallow lover of reality television shows and when E! introduced me to this man and his gorgeous wife, I was hooked! (YES!)

decker - 1

That’s Eric Decker and his pregnant wife, Jessie James. Eric is a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos and Jessie is a country singer. They also star in the E! reality series Eric and Jessie: Game On. They are currently filming season two and are expecting their first baby (a girl) this spring. They did this sexy photo shoot for GQ Magazine‘s February “Love, Sex & Madness” issue which will hit newsstands January 28th .

decker - 2

Even their dog is cute. And apparently Eric likes to bake cupcakes? brownies? Capn’ Crunch cookies? (with lots of eggs?) while hanging out in an open hoodie sweatshirt. Works for me.

decker - 3

Doesn’t everyone have couples baths with a dozen long stemmed red roses? They are very cute. I’ve watched their reality show and they have amazing chemistry. The final playoffs are this weekend and Eric’s had a record-breaking season. We’ll find out who makes it to the Super Bowl this Sunday. I know who I’m rooting for. Go Broncos!

Golden Globes ’14: My Favorite Moments

I love all award shows, but the Golden Globes are always the most fun. There is alcohol on the table. The TV stars mix with the movie stars. We get to watch the winners awkwardly zigzag and weave their way to the podium. There is the occasional “f” or “s” bomb. Here are a few of my favorite moments from last night’s 2014 Golden Globes!

 1. Tina and Amy can do no wrong

Can these two awesome ladies host every year, please? Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler are fearless and funny.  You can tell they are BFFs. My favorite joke of the night was a Gravity reference: “George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.” Ha.

globes - 1

2. Matthew McConaughey hey hey

Yay! My boy Matthew won the Golden Globe for Best Actor-Drama for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. It was one of the surprises of the night. Matthew has truly reinvented himself. He was the king of the quirky romantic comedy, but this film showed his commitment to new, complicated roles. I had the opportunity to work with Matthew when he came to Washington, DC on a press tour many years ago. He was the most down-to-earth and humble guy. I love when good people win big.

462623113XX00100_71st_Annua

3. American Hustle wins!

I always try to see a bunch of the nominated films before award show season and my favorite was most definitely American Hustle. I was excited it won for Best Motion Picture: Comedy or Musical and both Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence picked up awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Go. See. This. Movie.

globes - 3

4. J-Law and T-Swift

Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, she was the talk of twitter when she photobombed Taylor Swift’s interview with Ryan Seacrest during the E! Red Carpet arrivals show. This pic says it all. Jennifer is just so REAL. That’s why we all root for her. And calm down, people. There was no animosity.  J and Tay have been friends for years.

globes - 4

globes - 5

5. Cate Blanchett’s Dress..and Win!

Cate Blanchett always looks amazing on the red carpet and her dress last nigth was my favorite by far. I love the black lace and the back was a cool surprise. Plus, her pinned up retro hair was perfection. AND she won the award for Best Actress-Drama for her flawless performance in Blue Jasmine. I think Oscar may come knocking!
