Taylor Swift: “Red”

I can’t stop singing this song! It’s the title song from Taylor’s new album, Red, which will hit stores/on-line/the universe on Monday, October 22nd.

Taylor said the song was about “love” (of course) and how she sees emotions as colors.  She told GMA this week, “I wrote this song about the fact that some things are just hard to forget because the emotions involved with them were so intense, and to me, intense emotion is red.”

Or maybe she’s talking about her lipstick?

Happy Weekend, everyone.  Go do something “red.”

Taylor Swift introduces “Red”

Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album, titled Red, will officially hit stores October 22nd!  I’m SO excited.  She announced her first single off the album (“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”  LOVE it.) last night during an exclusive web chat with her fans.  As always, the album is filled with personal songs about love. She named it Red because “all those emotions – spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion – in my mind, all those emotions are red.  There’s nothing in between; there is nothing beige about any of those feelings.”

Here’s Taylor’s entire web chat followed by her brand new song, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Beware: It’s CATCHY.

Annabel’s First Movie: “Ice Age 4”

After we decided not to take Annabel to Brave as her first “movie theatre” movie, it was on to Plan B. (Daniel’s first theatre movie was Cars 2.)

Plan B. was Ice Age: Continental Drift which opened this weekend.  Our whole family went to today’s first matinee show and Annabel had the Best. Time. Ever.  Annabel has seen Ice Age 1, 2 and 3 at home, so I wasn’t worried about her being scared of any of the characters.  And she is a pretty easy going kid.  I think she loved the snack box and the pre-show arcade fun as much as the movie.  Success!

Not so “Brave”

We decided not to take Annabel to Brave as her very first movie theatre movie because of some of the reviews.   (Daniel’s first movie theatre movie was Cars 2. It was the perfect choice for my little car lover although the movie was “eh.”  That’s MY official review. )  I knew Brave would be perfect for Annabel because it’s about Disney/Pixar’s new princess, Merida.  And Princess Merida has curly hair (like Annabel!) and Merida is tough and can hang with the boys.  She’s a different kid of Disney Princess and she just seems SO COOL.

But some of the reviews I read on CommonSenseMedia.org said things like:

“Too scary for young children!!!” (Yes, with THREE exclamation points.)

“Brave requires bravery to watch with younger children…”

“Too scary.”

“Great message – but scary for little ones.”

“Why would you take your sweet, innocent 4 year old daughter to this SUPER SCARY movie?”

That last one was me.  Sorry.

Now, I’m all about Annabel seeing a strong-willed princess on the big screen. But I just couldn’t chance her crying and wanting to leave.  This would be her first experience at the fancy movie theatre.  I imagined her in the sweet little Brave T-shirt I bought her from the Disney store.  She would be munching on popcorn and then, all of a sudden, the big scary bears would jump on screen and she would run for the exit. And she might not want to go back to that scary movie theatre place ever, ever again.

So, we decided to wait and take her to see Ice Age 4 when it opens next month.  She’s seen 1, 2, and 3 at home and she loves all the characters.  I’m not worried about that one.  And to cushion the blow after telling Annabel on Sunday afternoon that we had to change plans because Brave was only for “older kids,”  I bought her the book and the Merida baby doll.  (I’m a sucker. Yes. I know.)

Speaking of new Disney princesses, here’s a just released sneak peek of Disney Junior’s new princes series called Sofia the First.  (And this one does not look scary at all.  Phew!) Sofia the First debuts this fall as a primetime television movie on the Disney Channel, followed by the series premiere on Disney Junior in early 2013.  Modern Family star Ariel Winter voices Sofia.

SeaWorld ’12

Since both kiddies had their last day of school on Friday of Memorial Weekend, we decided to head out on a family adventure and visit SeaWorld Orlando.  It was our first family visit.  We arrived in Orlando on Friday evening and spent some time in Downtown Disney before crashing at the hotel.  Then we were up bright and early on Saturday so we could get in line before the SeaWorld gates even opened.  I definitely recommend the priority parking because we were directed to the very front and it was perfect when we wanted to leave after a fun and exhausting day.

Our first stop was Dolphin Cove.  I’ve been in love with dolphins ever since Hubbie and I swam with the beautiful animals during our honeymoon trip to Jamaica.  We decided to forego the dolphin encounter and feedings since it was our very first visit, but we will DEFINITELY be doing that next time.  We were able to see the dolphins being fed by some other folks and we watched them swim together and jump around.  It was awesome.  But we really enjoyed the smaller Dolphin Nursery where the baby dolphins had a large pool area all to themselves.  One dolphin came right up to Annabel and smiled and waved.  And then did it again! Heaven!  (I just wish I had a picture of that moment but I was too mesmerized by the dolphins to think about bringing a camera up to my face.)

Right next door to the dolphins was the Stingray Lagoon.  The kids loved to try and touch the stingrays as they circled around.  There were so many of them and some even tried to interact by splashing around and raising their heads.  (Heads?  Is that right?)

There are a few aquariums throughout the park and you have to be careful not to walk right by them.  They are the perfect break from the heat. The kids loved to see all the exotic fish and sea creatures. One of the neatest aquariums was the one right before the brand new TurtleTrek experience where we saw a Manatee and a giant sea turtle family.

We stopped for a snack in Shamu’s Happy Harbor and then went on some fun kid-friendly rides.  They were perfect for the 5-and-under crowd.  Both kids loved the Shamu Express roller coaster and the Jazzy Jellies teacup ride.

We were right next to Shamu Stadium where we saw our first SeaWorld show, One World.  It features Shamu and all his Killer Whale friends.  They were amazing.  The entire show, including the music and the informational video screens, was fantastic and I loved that the trainers recognized all the service men and women in the audience before the performance.  We decided to stay away from the splash zone.  If you sit there, you will get soaked!  (Although it was a bit tempting on a 90 degree day!)

After a quick lunch at a pizza and pasta buffet, we changed the kids into their swim suits so they could cool off at the mini water park in Shamu’s Happy Harbor. That was definitely a highlight.  The kids had the best time. Then it was time to go.  We now have our list of shows and exhibits to visit during our next trip.  There just wasn’t enough time to fit it all in.  And I need to get my dolphin fix again very, VERY soon.

*NOTE: My family was provided with four complimentary tickets to SeaWorld Orlando.  All thoughts and opinions are always 100% my own and I was in no way compensated monetarily for this post.

One of the best parts of going to Hollywood Studios was the ride over on a Disney bus!  Daniel LOVES buses, so that was a special treat for him.  But before we headed out on our new adventure, we had some early morning breakfast plans with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, and Goofy at Chef Mickey’s restaurant in Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

This was our second time visiting Chef Mickey’s and the breakfast buffet is so yummy.  (The chocolate croissants are so good…MAYBE I had two.)  It’s also a great way to meet all our favorite buddies at one place.

Then we were off on our bus to Hollywood Studios!  We arrived a little after 9:30 AM and headed right to our most important meet-and-greet of the day: Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars!

Mater and McQueen were positioned WAY in the back of the park and there were no crowds at the time.  So we decided to hang out and take some fun studio back lot photos.

Then we saw some really awesome live shows: Disney Junior, Beauty and the Beast, and the Extreme Stunt Show.  The kids had a blast.  Especially since it was time for lunch at Toy Story‘s Pizza Planet!

For some reason my two kiddies refused to go on the super popular Toy Story Mania ride.  They thought it looked a little scary.  But it is definitely on the list for the next visit.  And so is the Little Mermaid ride which was so crowded.  We were hot and tired and ready to take a short hotel nap before our Mickey’s Backyard BBQ dinner at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.  We stuffed ourselves with chicken and ribs and all the fixins’ while listening to a live band play all our country favorites.  Annabel and Daniel danced with Mickey and Minnie and even did some hula hooping.  We had so much fun that we forget to take photos!  After our Mickey ice cream bar dessert, we took the boat back to the Wilderness Lodge to rest up for our final day at Disney World.

I was so excited to finally see Animal Kingdom.  I have a serious obsession with giraffes and the kids knew I was eagerly awaiting the Animal Kingdom’s popular Kilimanjaro Safaris Expedition.  After checking out the amazing Tree of Life, we went straight to Africa to FastPass the Safari.  The Africa landscape design was so breathtaking.  I felt like I was there.  We walked through a downtown marketplace complete with old buildings and open air restaurants.  It was really cool.  And it turned out that the Safari line was short so we didn’t need to FastPass at all!

We boarded the jeep and off we went in search of animals.  I saw my beloved giraffes!  They crossed the path right in front of us.  And the other animals were pretty amazing too.

After the jeep tour we continued on and did a walking tour of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.  The kids loved the birds and we saw a Mama and baby gorilla.

We stopped for a quick snack and then went to Finding Nemo – The Musical.  It was one of Annabel’s favorite shows so we let her buy a Nemo stuffed toy and she didn’t let go of it the entire day.  We then visited DinoLand U.S.A. to check out the The Boneyard play area and ride the TriceraTop Spin.  Daniel then wanted a dinosaur toy as his Animal Kingdom treat.  We got that and then went to our lunch reservation at Asia’s Yak & Yeti restaurant.  We were starving!

Yum-O!  I highly recommend this place.  It was also a nice change of pace to enjoy some table-service Asian food.  Hubbie and I shared some Ahi tuna and pot stickers and then I had a delicious crispy honey chicken dish.  They saved the best for last because the fried wontons for dessert were AMAZING.  Daniel loved the vegetable lo-mein and Annabel loved the kids ice cream sundae.  Note:  We were on the Disney Dining Plan which allowed us to get appetizers and dessert at our meals.  It was fun to sample everything.  The plan also includes daily snacks and most of the places we went to did accept the plan.

After lunch we noticed the character meet-and-greet tent did not have a long line so we took a second to meet the adorable Pooh, Eeyore, and Tigger.

I don’t know why we went to see the Bug’s Life “It’s Tough to be a Bug” 3-D movie because I had read that it was scary for the little ones.  And it was!  It was dark and there were stinging hornets and big black spiders falling from the ceiling. Everyone was screaming and the kids hated it.  Thank goodness it was only 8 minutes long.  Then Hubbie had to leave to use his FastPass for the Expedition Everest roller coaster so the kids and I went to the Festival of the Lion King.

Lion King was another great live performance show and we had the perfect end seats to enjoy all the beautiful set changes and acrobatics.  It was raining when we left, so Daddy met us at the exit with some Disney rain ponchos.  The cloud burst lasted five minutes, but we were tired and decided to head out and spend the rest of the afternoon lounging around our Wilderness Lodge resort.

Annabel and I found some comfy pool chairs and I enjoyed a cocktail while she enjoyed an orange smoothie. Daniel and Daddy spent an hour in the pool and Daniel went down the water slide about fifty times.  Then we used some of our Disney dining points for a room service dinner in our pajamas.  It was the perfect ending to another fun day.

The Disney Diaries: Day Three – Epcot!

Daniel was very excited when we rode the Disney monorail to Epcot because the monorail is one of his favorite “rides.”  We arrived at Epcot around 9:30 AM and went directly to “Future World.”  First on our list was to FastPass the Test Track ride.  Then we went to check out The Seas with Nemo & Friends.  We rode in a “clamobile” through the deep seas looking for Nemo. Then right next door we had some Turtle Talk with Crush.  It’s a live show where kids can have a conversation with the cool turtle from “Finding Nemo.”  It was really amazing and the kids went nuts for the “dude”-talking turtle.  He even answered Annabel’s question: How old are you?  (Answer: 150 years old.)

Then it was time for Test Track.  It’s a high-speed vehicle simulation ride.  I always get a little nervous when I see the “heart condition” signs next to a ride so I asked the attendant if it was scary. He said “No.”  But I would say it was a LITTLE scary but definitely a whole lot of fun.  We all loved it.  It’s now Daniel’s favorite ride.  The lady sitting next to Annabel could not believe how brave she was.  All Annabel said the entire time was “Wheee!”  She also said the ride messed up her hair.

We were lucky to be in Epcot during the International Flower and Garden Festival.  There were lots of cool character topiaries to check out and some fun garden mazes.  There was Bambi’s Butterfly House which the kids didn’t want to leave.   But we were on a mission to visit all eleven countries in the World Showcase!

We managed to visit every single country.  (We stayed in some countries longer than others.  Italy!  Japan!) I promised the kids they could pick out a small token from each country we visited.  It was tough to find ANYTHING under ten dollars so we collected a lot of flags, magnets, and pins.  Annabel did pick up a really cute Hello Kitty doll from Japan and Daniel loved the gummy candies from Germany.  We all loved the pretzels in Germany too.  Oh, and I loved the German beer.  We also had a delicious lunch in Italy with an amazing bottle of Italian white wine. This might be why we ended up with 2 flags from Norway and nothing from Morocco.  Ha.

There were also some neat street performers and musicians to entertain us as we strolled along.  We were definitely exhausted after leaving the last country, but we wanted to go back to Future World for two final rides:  Journey Into Imagination with Figment and Soarin’.  The Figment ride was cute and has the iconic purple dragon that Annabel just loved.  But I wish I would have skipped Soarin’.  Annabel and Daddy loved it. Mama and Daniel did not.  It’s basically a movie that makes you feel like you are hang-gliding.  I almost vomited my pasta from Italy.  I kept my eyes closed most of the time.

All in all, I would recommend Epcot for kids.  It can be fun for little ones.  We picked up the Epcot Passport at the entrance gift shop so the kids could get a stamp from each country.  We had to find the “Kidcot” stand and the country representative would stamp their book and write a fun note too.  It’s a great keepsake from our first visit to Epcot.

Now I can’t wait to go back and sample more of the food and beverages.  I didn’t get a chance to get my sweet pastry treat from France.  Next time.  Definitely.

The Disney Diaries: Day Two – Magic Kingdom!

You can read The Disney Diaries: Day One HERE.

We woke up really early Monday morning and had a small breakfast at the Roaring Fork snack shop in our Wilderness Lodge resort.  We then jumped on the boat to the Magic Kingdom.  The boat service is so easy and convenient and the boats run about every 15 minutes.  I booked Annabel an appointment at Magic Kingdom’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for 8:30 AM, so we entered through the Magic Kingdom gates before everyone else.  It was awesome and I highly recommend the early appointment for this reason.

On our way to the boutique, which is inside Cinderella’s Castle, we stopped to take some photos of the kids on Main Street.  It was just us and a few other families milling around.  Perfect.

We arrived at the boutique and the first thing Annabel did was pick out her princess dress from the big wardrobe in the entrance.  Now this was a BIG decision.  She finally decided on Ariel’s dress, which is an adorable mint green color.  We purchased the “Castle Package” which included the dress and the salon service.  (It DOES NOT include shoes and we made the mistake of letting Annabel fall in love with a pair of silver sparkly slippers before we realized they were EXTRA.  Ooops.)

Annabel put on her dress in the dressing room and was then brought to her salon chair for hair, make-up, and nail service.  Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Isn’t this a little too Toddlers & Tiaras?”  It really isn’t.  It’s truly magical. Annabel was wide-eyed the entire time.  It was a really sweet experience.  The makeup is just some play eyeshadow, blush and lip gloss and a glitter sticker for her cheek.  I’ve never put makeup or nail polish on Annabel before, so she really felt like a princess. They even ended the experience with a pixie dust sprinkle.  The only cringing thing was watching them put an entire half bottle of gel into her long, curly hair.  She loved it, but it took two days to get it all out.  The things we do for some magical Disney fun!

After the boutique experience, we had brunch reservations at Cinderella’s Royal Table inside the castle. Cinderella does not do the rounds inside the restaurant.  You meet her in the lobby before you enter.

During the breakfast we met Aurora, Belle, Jasmine, and Ariel.  Annabel loved that she was wearing the Ariel dress when she met Ariel.  It was super cute.  Daniel was thrilled to eat two cinnamon rolls and a plate of pancakes.  Hubbie and I loved the food and the endless cups of coffee.  They gave all the girls a princess wand and all the boys a sword.  Everyone also received a wishing star.  We had a great view of the park from our table.  All in all, I highly recommend Cinderella’s Royal Table, even if you don’t do the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.  And if you make an early reservation (before 9:00 AM), you can enter the park early (like we did) which is a very nice perk.

Then it was finally time to go on some rides! Fantasyland was first with Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Goofy’s Barnstormer, Peter Pan’s Flight, The Carousel, It’s A Small World, and Mickey’s PhilharMagic.  The kids made me go on Barnstormer two times even though I’m not a fan of roller coasters. (At least it’s a short ride.) There were some technical delays with the PhilharMagic show, but we stayed until they fixed it.  It was nice to rest in some air conditioning and it was worth the wait.  The 3D experience was really neat.  Then, we headed to Adventureland for a snack: The famous Disney World Dole Whip and Dole Whip float!

You can only get the Dole Whip at Adventureland’s Aloha Isle snack window.  The verdict?  Very yummy, but Annabel and I prefer the Dole Whip ice cream while Daddy and Daniel loved the float with the pineapple juice.

We spent some time in Adventureland riding Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, and walking the entire Swiss Family Treehouse (Daniel’s favorite.)  The lines were getting long so we decided to head back to Main Street to get some good seats for the 3:00 PM parade and grab a quick lunch.  We love the “Celebrate A Dream Come True” parade.  It’s definitely one of our Magic Kingdom not-to-miss experiences.

After the parade, we took the boat back to our resort for some rest/naps and then we were back at the Magic Kingdom by 5:30 PM.  We grabbed dinner at Tomorrowland’s Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe. (Annabel went bonkers for the piano playing puppet.) Daddy and Daniel rode some race cars on the Tomorrowland Speedway while Annabel and I strolled around looking at the shops. We met up at Cinderella’s Castle for dessert and the 7:30 PM “Dream Along with Mickey” show.  Dessert was the famous Mickey ice cream bar (they are AWESOME) while we watched the show.  The sun began to set and it was the perfect ending to the day.

Quick note: We did rent a Disney double stroller for the week.  We received a week of vouchers that we could show the stroller attendant each day.  It didn’t matter if we left and came back later either.  And they were good for any of the Disney parks.   It is expensive, so you need to budget for it.  But it was worth it.  Even four and five-year-olds get tired of walking and Daddy didn’t want to always have someone on his shoulders.

The Disney Diaries: Day One

Disney World is the most magical place on earth!  We are all still recovering from a week of family fun and bonding in the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios.  And I finally downloaded all my photos. (over 750!)

We arrived in Orlando on Sunday afternoon around 3:00 PM because the check-in was supposed to be at 4:00 PM. But, of course, our room was ready when we got there.  (Gotta love the Disney service!) We stayed at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge which literally looks like a giant cabin my kid made out of giant Lincoln logs.  It is enormous, but still has that cozy feel.  The lobby has a huge fireplace, a bridge with a small stream underneath, and lots of comfy sofas and chairs.  After hanging in the lobby for a bit, we finally went upstairs to check out our room…with BUNK BEDS!

The kids were in heaven.  It would be their first time sleeping in bunk beds and they could not wait. Daniel is five-years-old and Annabel just turned four, so it was the perfect room set-up for our family.  Daniel had the top bunk and Annabel had the bottom bunk.  Daniel called his the pirate ship and Annabel was in her princess cave.  We had early dinner reservations at the hotel restaurant, Whispering Canyon Cafe, so we made our way back downstairs.  The dinner was yummy and the kids especially loved the Lincoln log play table in the entrance.  Daniel almost didn’t want to finish his dinner because he was so excited to keep building.  Hubbie and I were excited to have our first vacation cocktail.

After dinner, we headed next door to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort for Chip’n Dale’s Campfire Sing-a-long.  We had to take a boat ride over.   The boat dock was down a short path past the pool deck.  It was so much fun for the kids to ride the boat each day to and from the resort.

After safely docking at Fort Wilderness, we had to take a short bus ride to the location of the campfire sing-a-long.  Fort Wilderness is huge!  It’s a campground with campsites for RV hook-ups as well as rental cabins. They have a small water park and lots of neat camp-like activities.  When we arrived at our destination, the kids saw Chip and Dale right away and took off running.  They joined in a fun game of “red light-green light.” Annabel and Daniel even took turns holding the “stop” and “go” signs. They had a blast.

Then we bought our s’mores kits and headed over to the fire pits.  The sing-a-long was fun and the kids had the chance to hang out again with their new Disney buddies, Chip and Dale.

We were too tired to stay for the outdoor movie.  (It was The Incredibles.  Each night was a different Disney family movie under the stars.)  We had a jam packed week ahead of us, so we went back to the resort for a good night’s sleep.

Check back tomorrow for The Disney Diaries: Day Two – Magic Kingdom!
