Taylor Swift & Jake Gyllenhaal

Don’t you just love (or hate) our world of camera phones?  You can’t hide from anyone these days.

This photo of Taylor and Jake was snapped by a customer at a hip coffeehouse in Taylor’s hometown of Nashville.   It looks like they are definitely “dating” or “hanging out.”  This weekend I’ve also learned that they really love coffee because they were also spotted in Brooklyn, NY on Thanksgiving Day sharing maple lattes.  (Yum or yuck?  I can’t decide.)

I think they’re a cute couple.  I can’t wait to hear the song she writes about THIS relationship.

Holding On Tight

It’s been a weird couple of weeks in terms of my parenting. I’ve been having these two extremes.   I either lose it completely or I become submissive and give in.  I don’t know if it’s because of the kiddies’ ages right now or my tolerance level is just completely depleted or WHAT?

We have a really gorgeous Pottery Barn Kids kitchen set that we received from “Santa” last Christmas.  It’s really cool looking and it goes well with the rest of the living room and kitchen decor.  Maybe that sounds a little snotty, but I feel if I’m going to put a giant “toy” (basically) in my living space, it needs to be something I like.

The kiddies have been going crazy with that play kitchen lately.  Not pretend cooking and serving but THROWING EVERYTHING.  I don’t mind a mess when it’s associated with fun play, but it really bugs me when it’s just picking up a toy pan or plastic pea pod and chucking it across the floor.  Or banging silver pots and pans agains the wood kitchen until one of the handles actually flies off.

I found myself  SCREAMING (ugh, I know) at them to clean it up and then that changed into asking them, or rather PLEADING with them, to tell my WHY?!  WHY would you do this?!   WHY are you just throwing things?!  You have to just turn around and clean it right up and there is nothing fun about that, so WHY?  WHY?!!  And I just kept talking and yelling and then I had to leave the room because, well, I just didn’t know what to do with all that…yuck.

I always took pride in the fact that I was not a screaming parent.  We have discipline books we follow and methods that generally work.  So the fact that I screamed like that really eats away at me.  I apologized to them afterwards, but it feels like it’s too late to take it back.  I once read that when you scream at your child it takes a way a small piece of their childhood.  I don’t know who said that but, yeah, that stings.

Then there are the other times when I shut down or I bargain.  Today at our Christmas card photo shoot, Annabel had a break down.  And all I could do was sit there and offer to buy her a toy or ice cream or ANYTHING if she would just SIT STILL.  For ONE SECOND.  What do you want?!  I’ll buy you ANYTHING you want!  (Did I really say that?)  Well, it didn’t work and then I had no energy left.  My nerves were shot.  I ordered a Christmas card with the one salvageable photo in the bunch.  Actually that one salvageable photo was really great.  But I didn’t see the silver lining.  I just left feeling defeated.

It’s hard being a parent.  It’s really hard.  There is so much to juggle and organize and anticipate that sometimes I don’t feel prepared or emotionally equipped.  There are days I feel like I’m running around in circles and get nothing done besides sending the kids to time out and cleaning up messes.

But there is so much good.  SO much.  So much laughter. So much adventure.  So much fun.  SO much love.   I just hate that some days my frustration overshadows that.    Because I really do have two of the super coolest kids in the whole world.

This parenting thing.  It really is a roller coaster ride.

NKOTBSB on 2010 AMAs

It was boy band HEAVEN last night on the 2010 American Music Awards.   New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys closed the show in a big way.  They took some advice from the success of Glee and did some really neat song mash ups.  I thought they all looked super cute and did an awesome job.  Now just expand your NKOTBSB tour to more cities, guys!

GLEE: Umbrella

This was my favorite performance on Glee this week.  I know I didn’t speak too highly of Gwyneth’s performance at the CMA Awards, but she sure rocked her guest role on Glee.  Is there an Emmy in her future??

People Magazine: Sexiest Man Alive 2010

Thank you, People Magazine.  Good choice!

I think Ryan Reynolds was at his sexiest when he was playing a father in the romantic comedy “Definitely, Maybe.”  (Dads are sexy.)

This issue is on stands Friday. (It also features “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm.  Yum!)

Fair

We went to the Jacksonville Fair last week and it was the perfect adventure to display my kiddies’ unique personalities.  Daniel is the daredevil who wanted to go on every single ride, including the super big Ferris wheel.   He was in awe the entire time.  He loves to figure out how things work.   My husband loved the view of the football stadium. (Go Jags!)

Annabel screamed with glee when she saw all the crazy fair food.   She hung onto that popcorn bag the entire time.  And her favorite part of the fair was dancing to all the hip hop music that was blasting from the speakers of that Himalaya ride. (Okay, I liked it too.)

On a side note, and somewhat related to all the fair food consumption, I am now on a diet.  I HATE to say diet, so I will change that to: I am now choosing better foods to eat and I will also exercise more.   My last hurrah was that yummy funnel cake at the fair.  Hopefully now that I’ve put this down in writing, I will actually stick to it.  My goal is to be down a pants size by my February birthday.  And, yes, I know the holidays are coming.  This is gonna be hard. (Oh how I heart you, pumpkin pie.)

CMA Awards 2010

I was so excited Miranda Lambert won big last night at the CMA Awards.  She won four awards including Female Vocalist of the Year.  I’m pretty sure it was all because of her amazing song, “The House That Built Me.”  If you have not heard the song yet, you MUST click here

Lady Antebellum won Single of the Year for their massive crossover hit, “Need You Now.”  Gwyneth Paltrow performed the title song from her new movie, Country Strong. I thought she did a good job.  But she is promoting her new movie not entering the world of country music.  Her performance was so hyped in all the CMA promos, it seems a little unfair to all the uber talented ladies of country who were there because they truly are successful country music singers.  Just sayin’.

Taylor Swift didn’t win any awards last night but she had an amazing live performance of “Back to December” – the song supposedly about her former boyfriend Taylor Lautner.  She looked beautiful (What a dress! And awesome red lipstick!) and she played piano while fake snow fell around her.  She did a great job and unexpectedly ended the performance by mouthing “What??” while the curtain closed.  I tweeted about it last night and now Taylor’s rep has told Entertainment Weekly that she was just excited about the standing ovation.

Here’s a clip of Taylor’s performance last night.

Glee Sneak Peek: Teenage Dream

Here’s a performance of Katy Perry’s smash hit Teenage Dream from tonight’s episode of Glee.  Enjoy!

Ricky Martin

Ricky Martin has been super busy lately.  He’s making the publicity rounds to promote his new book, Me. He visited Oprah last week.  It was his first television interview since publicly admitting he was a gay earlier this year.  It was a great interview.  He was very open. He seems truly happy and he’s now a father to two adorable twin boys (via surrogate.)

I’ve always been a huge Ricky Martin fan.  I remember watching his American debut at the 1999 Grammy awards.  I was with a bunch of friends and we could not stop talking about this charismatic guy.  And he was so GORGEOUS.

Then he came out with his huge hit song, Livin’ La Vida Loca.  I’m going to go ahead and give it one of my Best Pop Songs EVER stamps.

My favorite Ricky Martin moment, however, was actually getting to MEET Ricky Martin.  It was a brief encounter at my husband’s radio station about 4 years ago.  He was unbelievably humble and sweet.  And, yes, he is even more gorgeous in person.  I’m a lucky gal.

Sushi

Daniel’s very first piece of sushi.  A California Roll from the grocery store.  Yummy avocado, crab stick, and cucumber covered with brown rice.

Baby steps for my little foodie.
